7 Curb Appeal Fixes That Help Your House Sell Faster.
Buyers form an opinion before they get out of the car. These are the exterior fixes worth doing first.
Real estate agents will tell you the same thing we see on job sites: buyers decide how they feel about a house within the first few seconds of pulling up. Interior updates matter, but exterior condition is what gets people through the front door in the first place — or has them driving straight past.
You don't need a full renovation to make a strong first impression. Here are the fixes that tend to matter most, roughly in order of impact.
1. Repaint or Touch Up Faded Exterior Paint
Chalky, faded, or peeling paint is one of the fastest ways to make a house look neglected, even if everything inside is in great shape. A fresh coat — or even just touching up trim, the front door, and shutters — makes the whole exterior look cared for.
2. Repair Damaged Siding Before Photos
Cracked, warped, or missing siding panels are easy for buyers (and inspectors) to spot. Spot repairs are usually quick and inexpensive compared to a full re-side, and they remove an easy negotiating point for buyers later.
3. Pressure Wash Everything
Driveways, siding, walkways, and porches collect a surprising amount of grime over a year or two. A pressure wash alone can make a house look years newer without any paint or repair work at all.
4. Fix or Replace a Tired Fence
If your property has a fence, buyers will notice if it's leaning, missing pickets, or clearly rotting at the base. A fence in good repair reads as "well-maintained property" — a fence falling apart raises questions about what else hasn't been kept up.
5. Give the Front Door Some Attention
Your front door is the single most photographed exterior feature in most listings. A bold, well-painted front door in good condition (no peeling, no dents) does a lot of visual work for very little cost.
6. Check the Roof Line
Buyers and inspectors both look up. Missing shingles or obvious roof wear can spook buyers even before an inspection happens. If it's been a while since your roof was checked, it's worth a free inspection before you list — see our post on signs your roof needs repair.
7. Clean Up Landscaping and Walkways
This one isn't paint or repair work, but it matters just as much: trimmed bushes, edged walkways, and a mowed lawn frame everything else you've fixed. A freshly painted house surrounded by overgrown landscaping still looks unfinished.
- Walk your property line the way a buyer would — from the street, not from inside.
- Take photos in daylight and review them critically before your listing photos are taken.
- Get repairs quoted early — siding and roof work can take longer to schedule than paint.
